Recently I was asked to do a designer diary on PopTop’s latest project, Tropico, for GameSpot. I was confused, so I said yes. |

The crew on board PopTop continues on its creative voyage bound for glory as we continue our hunt of the elusive game called… called… hmmm.
“An issue has come to my attention, boys,” Captain Phil announced. “We’ve no name for our quarry, and that just won’t do! I need a name for our prize before we hit the port of E3, or there’ll be harsh language for you all!” |

Quarter to Three
PopTop was just acquired by Take 2. What’s the stupidest thing about running your own company? Lawyers. I’m married to a lawyer. Most of my college buddies turned into lawyers. My brother’s a lawyer. I can’t stand ’em (the lawyering part – they’re all quite honorable and nice people otherwise). |

Stomped
You chose not to include a multiplayer mode in the game. Why? We had it in the original design, but dropped it pretty early. Basically, a multi-player version of Tropico would have been an entirely different game. We could have made you face external rivals, but really, for guys like Castro, the only rivals are big-country rivals like the United States and Russia – he doesn’t care all that much about what goes on on the other islands. We would have had to really manufacture interactions between you and the other players, and it just wouldn’t have felt right. |

The PopTop sailed into the warm seas of summer, though it knew a storm was brewing.
The ship was taking on water. Only a little, but it was obvious it would need repair. The question was not only where could we repair her so far out to sea, but also how? Repairs like this usually require money, oftentimes lots of money. Our original benefactor was showing signs of weakness. Communication with them was spotty at best, and there was a distinct absence of funds when communications did catch up with the crew. The PopTop would have to dock for repairs, but it would take time – and time was in short supply. Our due date was fast approaching, and scant few sightings of the beast had been made. Tropico was still far from capture. |
| 29 March 01 The Sound of Musica |
The Sound of Musica, by Jeff Smith. Go read it, it’s a riot.
The style of music had been determined by our lead-every-job Phil. He had dug around for a couple of months trying to lock down a suitable musical artist. He ran into a great deal of trouble dealing with the music industry people and decided to ask another member of our team to follow up on the task of finding someone who could produce the Bachata style music earmarked for Tropico. After about another six to eight weeks this team member returned to Phil with bad news: he’d failed his quest for attracting musical genius. Phil then turned to another of the Tropico team. “You,” he pointed at a-person-who-shall-not-be-named-here. “Bring me a musician that can produce this Bachata music I require.” His face ashen, Person-X set about his appointed task. Three weeks past and he too returned. “I have not the musician you seek.” He shuddered. Phil was not amused. |
