- The Tillerman will only obey the person nearest to him. Should there be more than one player on the ship, only the player nearest to him can navigate.
- The Tillerman will obey ghosts.
- A single-click on the Tillerman will reveal the ship’s name and its decay status.
- Using the Tillerman while on the ship allows you to set its name.
- Using the Tillerman while standing on shore allows you to dry dock the boat if the conditions are met – the deck and hold contain no items, the boat’s anchor is down and you have the ship’s key in your backpack.

| Direction, Drift Left/Right | Moves in desired direction. |
| One Direction, Direction One | Moves one tile in the desired direction. |
| Slow Direction | Moves slowly in the desired direction. |
| Turn Around, Come About | Turns around. |
| Turn Left, Port | Turns to the left. |
| Turn Right, Starboard | Turns to the right. |
| Stop, Furl Sail | Stops moving. |
| Unfurl Sail | Moves forward. |
| Set Name ship name | Names your ship. |
- Double-click a map and chart a course by sticking pins into it.
- You can remove a pin by clicking on it and dragging it off the map.
- You have to plot your course around any landmass, or your ship will stop when it runs aground.
- Give the map to the Tillermap to set the ship’s course, then speak the relevant command.
