FYI :: Scam Policy Update
In the past, Game Masters have acted as intermediaries in calls where players have misused game systems to take advantage of others. Unfortunately, this has led to increased call times due to the extreme difficulty in determining the truth of these matters. However, since the implementation of secure house trading, commodity deeds and repair service contracts, we have noticed a significant reduction in scam calls to our support department.

With the success of these new systems, we plan to discontinue our policy of dealing with scams on a case-by-case basis as of Monday, December 10th. We will no longer mediate trust issues in-game, and we encourage all players to protect themselves by reading our new document on Scam Prevention found here. Any abuse of game mechanics to scam another player will be treated as an exploit, and we will address these at their source, as we would any development-related exploit. We hope this will ultimately free up the significant amount of time Game Masters have to spend on scam calls, allowing them to focus on addressing more service needs and lowering the overall wait-times that players experience when requesting assistance.

In addition to familiarizing yourself with these recent game system additions (see links below), don’t forget to read our Scam Prevention document, which will help you avoid being caught in a possible scam situation. Game masters will not replace items lost through scams, so be sure to educate yourself on the best ways to keep your gold and your items safe!

Salon Interview – 03rd December 01 – nocturne
Salon.com has an article posted. It’s a sorta profile kinda thing.
He’s talking about the aptly titled Tabula Rasa, an online game currently in development, which he says will draw from the teachings of the Dalai Lama and Plato’s “Republic.” But that’s not why he’s in my apartment. At the moment, he’s overseeing the American debut of Lineage: The Blood Pledge, an online role-playing game that entertains millions of Asian game players.

Player Relations Comments has been updated with comments from Mustang, Team 1337, EA Player Relations.
I suppose, before I go any further, I should provide some background about myself. I have a psychology degree from the University of Texas and a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law. When I graduated from law school, I did take the Bar exam and became a licensed attorney, although I never really practiced law. The reason for that is too long to answer, and I am not going to go into it here. The short answer is that being an attorney was not that enjoyable, and I wanted something that I would truly love doing.

Evil in a Can – 12th December 01 – nocturne
Ilshenar Titles
FierYiCe –
Yes in theory it would be possible for someone to solo the “Evil in a Can” spawn but it would be extremely difficult. I’ll go into a bit more detail of how the spawn areas shrink and grow to show you why it would be very very hard to do it by yourself.

I’ve already mentioned the basic rules of you have to kill enough creatures to make the area shrink and also if not enough creatures get killed the area will grow. Of course it isn’t quite that simple because the number of creatures that have to be killed and the delay of time between the checks to see if it should grow and shrink also change while it is running.

The size of the region determines the delay between the check to see if it should grow or shrink. So if it is really small it may take only like 10–15 minutes before it will see if enough things have been killed. The flip side of that is if the region is huge it could take 30–40 minutes before it would check. The reason for this is because when the region gets larger you have to kill more creatures so we give you a bit more time to do it in. Speaking of that, the number of creatures you have to kill also scales depending on the size of the spawn area. While it is small you may only have to kill 5–10 things in that 10–15 minutes to get it to shrink, but when it is huge you may have to kill like 150–250 creatures in 30–40 minutes.

And for those who haven’t figured it out the darkness in the area is directly related to the spawn area. If it is just a little dark then it is small. If it is it’s maximum size it is dungeon level lighting. And if the spawn size changes while you are in the area you should notice the light level change dynamically at the same time.

So say you want to solo the “Evil in a Can” spot and you get there and it is maxed out. And let’s say the random numbers are in your favor today and you only have to push the spawn area back just a little bit, say 4 times. Well if you do the math (and no, it’s not exact because there are random factors involved) you could get a scenario of something like:
  • Spawn Area is Huge: Kill 150 Creatures in 35 minutes.
  • One size smaller: 130ish Creatures in 33 minutes.
  • One size smaller: 110 Creatures in 31 minutes.
  • One size smaller: 90 Creatures in 29 minutes.
  • One size smaller: 70 Creatures in 27 minutes.
That’s 400 creatures in 120 minutes. (2 Hours) And you would have to kill the appropriate amount in the given amount of time.

Plus on top of that when you get that push to the point where you *could* get a boss monster there is only a 1 in 4 chance it will show up.

Ahh, random numbers… :) Keep in mind that this level of difficulty is intentional to give players a challenge and to be all honest it wouldn’t surprise be if it took a group of people 4–6 hours or more to get a boss to show up.

And remember all the numbers in here are not exact… But if you kill a lot of critters and you notice that it is getting lighter in the area then you are on the right track. :)

Merry Christmas! – 14th December 01 – nocturne
Testing for Next Update :: Holiday Gifts
Christmas 01 Gifts – Characters that are older than 30 days (real days, not UO days) will be given a holiday ticket in their backpacks upon logging into UO. This holiday ticket will only work for the character who received it originally.

Double-clicking this holiday gift ticket will bring up a menu that will allow players to choose one item per character. The chosen item will then be placed in the character’s backpack once the selection is made. All items are “blessed” (no loot/no steal), which means they cannot be looted or stolen, for a long as they remain in the top level of your backpack (and not in any sub-pack).

Dev Postings – 15th December 01 – nocturne
Hanse –
The design for ancient hammers is they were meant to be breakable. The fix is that if you’re wielding an ancient hammer, you must use it to craft (and cannot use blacksmithy tools in your backpack). The bonus to your skill is only applied if you wield the hammer (no bonus for using it from your backpack).

Plate chest BOD’s are fixed in publish 15.

I believe Vex has a fix for filling kegs with potions.

Tools crafters use should break. Tools are part of the tinkering economy.

Along with this, there are many other fixes in publish 15. The list will be on our website when it’s ready to be posted.
Hanse –
They do wear out, but have higher durability than a normal tinkered hammer. This allowed us to use a higher skill bonus on them. Else, we would have made the point bonus low, much like the mining gloves.
Calandryll –
They expansion and the fiction are connected, but they are not reliant on each other. In other words, we don’t have to wait on a scenario to release the game or wait on the game to release the scenarios.
Vex –
I won’t give away the exact formulas, but I can state that for any colored ore, your chance to smelt that ore at the lowest skill level at which you can mine that ore is 50%, and your chance increases as your skill does. So, for colored ore, it is safe to say that you always have at least a 50% chance to smelt it, if you can mine it.
Sannio –
I have a miner who is not GM yet, about 98.x in mining skill. However, his modified skill in mining is 100.0 due to the use of mining gloves. I found that I can read the stone mining and sand mining books, is this a bug? Does this mean I can mine stones and sand by now? No need to have unmodified skill = 100.00?
The fact that the mining gloves can boost your mining skill to the level needed to use those stone mining & sand mining books isn’t a bug. Feel free to take full advantage of the perks of wearing your mining gloves. :]

FYI :: Holiday Gifts for Active Players
To see that holiday gifts are given to active players and characters, a character must not only be at least 30 days old to receive a holiday gift ticket, but must also have been logged into the game at some point since the deactivation of last year’s holiday tickets. In other words, if a character received a holiday gift ticket last year, and has not been logged into the game since then, that character will not be eligible to receive a holiday ticket this year. However, any character older than 30 days that did not receive a gift ticket last year will receive one this year. It is also important to note that any unused holiday tickets claimed in the past will still be redeemable this year.

Please note that holiday gifts are only active on the Atlantic shard at this time. We will post another update once we determine a release schedule for the rest of the shards.

FYI :: Inappropriate Language – An Update
Ever gotten “spanked” in a guild war? Have you “owned” players in PvP? In a game like UO, where players from all over the world come together in a society of their own creation, it’s common for terminology to evolve into new meanings. Sometimes those words are innocent, like the words above, and sometimes, as in the case of the word “rape,” they’re not. The word “rape” is not an acceptable term to use in UO, regardless of whether it’s being used to mean the act of sexual assault, or simply having “raped” someone in PvP (meaning to have won, or dominated, the fight).

Why is there no distinction made? Well, our GMs have no way to discern what someone actually means when they use certain terms, and we will not get into debates as to the intended meaning of terms that are considered offensive by others. So if the word “rape” is used, and called in as harassment, the player will have their account penalized up to and including termination, regardless of the context.

When talking to other players you don’t know, don’t assume that they understand your meaning in cases like this. They could be new to the game, or maybe not a native English speaker. In short, please consider your audience when speaking!
