Feburary 2k

Top of Page Ye Bigge Patche – 23th Feb 2k
General Latest Game Update :: Server Publish
Single-clicking the left mouse button on a moongate will give you a description of what lies through the gate. This will allow you to know where the gate is currently going without having to jump through them over and over again until you reach your destination. This will help improve server performance as less players will need to “jump” through moongates.
Following the creation of “Young” player status, the ability to “instantly resurrect” is no longer necessary. After dying, you will automatically return as a ghost.
NPC and Monster Changes
NPCs will now train the appropriate skills when asked. Some NPCs will now train different skills than they did previously. An NPC will list all skills they can train when asked, “train”.
You will no longer get the item “a scroll”.
Monster treasure will be revamped. Most monsters will not carry backpacks, and some monsters will carry different treasure than they previously did.
Some NPCs will now carry items more appropriate to their jobs (beware of merchants with trapped boxes!).
Pet Changes
  • Pets will remain loyal much longer than they did in the past. Pets will remain loyal for over 24 hours.
  • Pack horses now have their packs on them when they die.
  • Pet transfers will perform the loyalty checks before the transfer window appears.
  • Friends of a pet will have a slightly more difficult time issuing commands to the pet.
  • Pack animals and horses will no longer say [tame] above them twice.
  • Horses and pack horses that go wild (and have had two or fewer previous owners) can be retamed and controlled by any of the original owners without any added difficulty.
  • Transferring a pet will no longer increase the difficulty in controlling the pet. However, if the transferred pet goes wild or is released, it will still incur the penalty for two previous owners.
  • When a pet that has had previous owners is retamed, the tamer has a chance, based on the tamer’s Animal Lore skill, of calming the pet down. A calmed pet’s difficulty to control is the same as if it had had one fewer owner. The difficulty will never be reduced below the pet’s original difficulty.
  • Starting loyalty of tamed pets is now slightly higher. This will prevent pets from going wild instantly on a failed command.
  • Failed pet transfers will now impact the creature’s loyalty less.
  • Pets who are automatically controlled without any taming or lore skill (horses, pack animals, and dogs, for instance) will no longer gain loyalty when issued a successful command.
  • The messages have been restored when you have no chance of taming a creature.
Secure Pet Trading
Secure pet trading will allow players to sell or trade items for tamed animals and monsters using the trade window. To trade a pet to another player the owner of the pet can;
  • Speak the words, “[pet name] Transfer”
  • A targeting cursor will appear. The pet owner can then target the person they wish to transfer the pet to.
  • A trade window will automatically appear.
    • The trade window will contain a deed in the current owner’s portion of the window. This deed will display the pet type and the pet’s name.
    • The other player may then place gold (or other items) into his portion of the window.
    • Once both participants have clicked the gems to agree to the trade, the pet will automatically be transferred to the new owner and the deed will delete itself.
    • If the transfer is cancelled, the deed deletes itself and all other items are returned to their owner.
Homes :: Info, Options & Commands Secure House Trading
Secure house trading will allow players to sell or trade items for houses using the trade window. To trade a house to another player the owner of the house can;
  • Click the “transfer” button in the house options menu.
  • A targeting cursor will appear. The house owner can then target the person they wish to transfer the house to.
  • A trade window will automatically appear.
    • The trade window will contain a deed in the current owner’s portion of the window. This deed is not an actual house deed, but will display the name of the house, the house type, and the sextant coordinates of the house’s location.
    • The other player may then place gold (or other items) into his portion of the window.
    • Once both participants have clicked the gems to agree to the trade, the house will automatically be transferred to the new owner and the deed will delete itself.
    • If the transfer is cancelled, the deed deletes itself and all other items are returned to their owner.
  • You will not be able to transfer a house to a character that already owns a house using this method.
We will also be making changes to the secure trading window to account for the amount and weight of items used in transfers and to stop any scams associated with the trade window. Information on this enhancement will be forthcoming.
Untamed monsters and animals in houses will “die” after a certain amount of time. A creature will be eligible for “death” if it has not been targeted or has not received or delivered damage within a given period of time.
Skills :: Skills Menu Trade Window Changes
Trade windows will become more secure.
  • You will not be able to trade a trapped item.
  • You will not be able to trade an item that was recently stolen.
  • You will not be able to trade items to a player if that player cannot hold the items.
    • If the items are too heavy for the player or if the items would exceed the number of items the player can carry, the trade will fail. All items in the trade window will go back into each character’s pack.
  • You will not be able to pick items up while the trade window is open. However, you will still be able to rearrange items in your own pack during the trade.
Rares Moonstones will be found on various monsters.
The exact purpose and functionality of the moonstones will be detailed in the Update Center on the uo.com site at a later date. These items will become useful in the future.
Please do not call Game Masters or Counselors looking for information regarding the moonstones. These items are related to the current ongoing fiction and the Game Masters and Counselors will not be giving out any information on these items.
Characters Healing tied to Dexterity
In an effort to balance the Healing skill with other methods of healing damage (such as healing potions and the greater heal spell), dexterity will affect the delay for healing and the penalty for finger slips while healing.
  • The higher a character’s dexterity, the less time it will take to complete a heal.
  • The amount of healing a character loses due to a finger slip will be reduced with a higher dexterity.
These changes are true for healing both yourself and other players.
Guild Stone Revisions
Guild Stones will be modified to enhance their functionality and efficiency. The system that controls Guild Stones has been modified to facilitate future enhancements. While most of these changes will be transparent to the players, there will also be some changes to the guild interface at the same time.

The War Menu
The War Menu will have a new option in the main menu of the Guild Stone. It can only be accessed by the Guild Master. The menu has the following options:
  • Declare war by name
    • The Guild Master will be able to enter the name of the opposing guild.
    • The system will do a name lookup and try to pull a match or a close match.
    • The Guild Master will then be given a display of the matches and close matches to the name entered.
    • Choosing one of the names on this list will send a war invitation to that guild.
    • A guild may only have up to 12 wars declared and not accepted at any given time.
      • Once a war is accepted by the other guild, the Guild Master may declare another war if he chooses to.
  • Accept War invitations (if any exist)
    • A menu will be displayed allowing the Guild Master to accept any war invitations they currently have.
    • A guild many only have up to 12 wars declared on them and not accepted.
      • If a 13th war is declared on the guild, the first invitation will be scrolled off the list.
      • There is no limit to the total number of wars a guild may take part in.
  • Decline War invitations (if any exist)
    • A menu will be displayed allowing the Guild Master to decline any war invitations they currently have.
  • Rescind War declarations (if any exist)
    • A menu will be displayed allowing the Guild Master to take back any war invitations they sent to other guilds.
  • Sue for peace (if any wars exist)
    • A menu will be displayed with all of the guilds the Guild Master’s guild is currently at war with. The Guild Master can then choose to stop the war using this option.
Changing the Guild Type
Revisions will be made to guild stones to address issues with changing the guild type (Order, Chaos, Neutral). A warning window will also alert you if a guild type change is already in progress when you try to change the guild type again. This window will include:
  • A message telling you how long you have to wait until the current change takes effect.
  • The option to either accept or cancel the change request.
    • Clicking “accept” will bring up the menu listing the guild types.
    • Clicking “cancel” will bring you back to the guild stone menu and will not reset the current guild stone change timer.
Guild Stone Decay
Guild stones will decay in approximately one week if they are not in a house.
  • Guild members will be messaged each time they log in if their stone is subject to decay.
  • The guild master of a guild will need turn the guild stone into a “teleport stone” before it decays.
Recruiting
Guild Masters who recruit guild members will no longer have to accept them. If a Guild Master selects a member for candidacy, that member will be accepted automatically.

Auto-cleanup
Characters in guilds that no longer exist will now be “cleaned up” and able to join other guilds automatically.

Fealty Calculation
The fealty calculation for guildstones will be made more efficient to alleviate the delay in shard start-up times.
Bugs You will no longer use more than one recall scroll when recalling off of a boat key.
Issues with smithing difficulty being higher than normal will be resolved.

NPC and Monster Changes
Testing for Next Update
You will no longer use more than one recall scroll when recalling off of a boat key.
Single-clicking the left mouse button on a moongate will give you a description of what lies through the gate. This will allow you to know where the gate is currently going without having to jump through them over and over again until you reach your destination. This will help improve server performance as less players will need to “jump” through moongates.
In Development
Pets will remain loyal much longer than they did in the past. Pets will now remain loyal for approximately 24 hours.
In Development :: New Log In Features
The log in menus of the UO client will be improved to include more options.

Log in with Last Character
This option will appear where the “save password” option currently is, provided that you have unchecked the save password option. Checking “Log in With Last Character” will automatically log in the character you last logged out with after you have entered your password.

Tutorial Option
“Young” players will have the option of entering the tutorial (to be detailed at a later date) instead of creating a character.
Rares Testing for Next Update
Moonstones will be found on various monsters. The exact nature and functionality of these items will be detailed at a later time.
Characters In Concept :: PvP Enchancements

Healing and Poisoning
You will not be able to heal a poisoned character through any method (healing skill, spells, potions, etc.) until they are first cured of poison.

Magic Reflect
The Magic Reflect spell will be enhanced to provide additional tactical options in player verses player combat. At this time, any spell, regardless of its circle, can be used to counter a magic reflect spell. This results in the same spell (or few spells) being used every time to bring down the reflect. This change will add variety and additional tactical options when fighting a character who has cast magic reflect.
  • The level of the spell cast on a target will determine the percent chance to bring down the reflect. The more powerful the spell you cast, the better chance you have of defeating the magic reflect spell.
    • If the spell is not successful in bringing down the magic reflect, the spell will be reflected back to the caster, as under the current system. However, the target will not lose their reflect spell.
    • If a spell is cast and reflected, the chance for a second spell to bring down the reflect will increase. The percent chance to bring down the reflect is cumulative.
    • Once a spell is cast that succeeds in bringing down the reflect the spell, it will damage the target. This is true even if the first spell cast successfully breaks the reflect.
    • Once a reflect is broken, there is a 10 second delay before the target can cast reflect again. This will stop players from simply casting magic reflect over and over again.
  • The power of a reflect spell will also be dependant on the caster’s intelligence.
    • The higher your intelligence, the more powerful your reflect will be. More powerful reflects will be more difficult to bring down, and conversely, weaker reflects (cast by those with lower intelligence) will be easier to bring down. As an example, casting energy bolt on a character with low intelligence will have a very high chance to bring down the reflect.
  • The mind blast spell will do significant damage to any caster who has this spell reflected onto them. This is to prevent players from simply casting this spell to bring down the reflect, knowing it will do little to no damage to them if it is not successful.
Archery
The archery skill will be tweaked to balance it and make it more effective in player verses player combat.
  • The minimum damage on bows, crossbows, and heavy crossbows will be increased.
  • The maximum damage on bows, crossbows, and heavy crossbows will be decreased a small amount.
  • The rate of fire will be increased a small amount for bows, crossbows, and heavy crossbows.
Overall, these change should provide both diversity and enhanced tactics in PvP. We are very interested in hearing what you think about these ideas and invite you to provide us with feedback by clicking here.

Top of Page Trinsic Falls, Have a Happy Valentine – 11th Feb 2k
General Trinsic, the City of Honour, has fallen to Undead armies.
No guards will respond to cries for help.
Looting a corpse will not bring a guard response.
Attacking players within Trinsic will not bring a guard response.
The Trinsic Moongate is still guard protected.
New Players who select Trinsic as their starting city will start in Moonglow instead.
The ability to create storage kegs has been removed.
Following a subsequent major publish, any items placed in a storage keg that are not locked down will decay. We strongly advise players to remove items from storage kegs and place them in a secure container or lock them down immediately. Storage kegs will again be made available at a later date. These changes will not affect potion kegs in any way.
The UO Guilds page of the Official Site has been updated to show character paperdolls.
You can select an option in My UO to allow people to view all your character’s skills.
Rares Valentine Day Gifts
A full bottle of Pink Champagne, of different colour from last year’s gift.

Top of Page Macro This – 15th Feb 2k
General FYI
The Ultima Online policy on unattended macroing has been updated to a “three-strike” policy. Players who are determined to be macroing in the game while not at their computers will now face the following repercussions:
  • 1st offense: 48 hour account suspension
  • 2nd offense: 72 hour account suspension
  • 3rd offense: permanent account suspension
It is our goal to provide an enjoyable and exciting co-operative gaming experience for all our users, and we feel that unattended macroing does not help us achieve this goal. For additional details regarding these account actions, and for information on the process by which we determine unattended macro users, please read our GameMaster FAQ by clicking here.
The UO Guilds page of the Official Site has been updated to show character paperdolls.
You can select an option in My UO to allow people to view all your character’s skills.

Top of Page Happy New Year! – 16th Feb 2k
Rares Valentine’s Day 2k / Chinese New Year – Formosa, based in the largely Chinese populated Taiwan, celebrates Chinese New Year. Falling on the 5th of Feb, this New Year brings in the Year of the Golden Dragon (the Chinese Lunar Calender follows a sixty year cycle with twelve animals and five elements).
Traditionally, children are given an Ang Pao by their elders. Meaning “Red Packet”, these small paper envelopes contain money and symbolise good fortune.
In UO, exclusive to the Formosa Shard, each character gets a red bag labeled “Year of the Dragon Moon” with 500 gold pieces in it.
I feel like I’m writing for FYI. (Not as though uo.com actually mentions this.)

Top of Page The Wonderful Enhancements We Have All Been Eagerly Waiting For! – 17th Feb 2k
General Testing for Next Update
Pets will remain loyal much longer than they did in the past. Pets will now remain loyal for over 24 hours.
Untamed monsters and animals in houses will “die” after a certain amount of time. A creature will be eligible for “death” if it has not been targeted or has not received or delivered damage within a given period of time.
In Development
Monster AI
Monsters will “path-find” better and will react to combat situations more intelligently. The net effect of monster AI will be that monsters will be more difficult and challenging to fight. The exact reactions monsters can have will not be detailed. Players will need to learn monsters’ behavior through fighting them and watching their reactions.
Homes :: Info, Options & Commands In Development :: Houses
Changes and enhancements to houses to facilitate the map expansion and allow more players to own a house.

One House per Account per Shard [UOR]
If any character on an account already owns a house on a shard, players will not be able to place a house or transfer a house to a character on that account on that shard. Players who already own more than one house on an account will not have to give any of them up, unless they wish to place a new house (see “New House Placement” below).

New House Placement
Players who already own a house who wish to place another house will be able to do so. When a new house is placed, all other existing houses on the same shard that belong to characters on that account will no longer be refreshable. This will allow the player to transfer their items from the old house(s) to the new one.

Pay close attention to the second half of this update. You can place a new house, but it means you lose all your current houses.

General Formosa Shard Opened [22022k]

We are pleased to announce the global opening of Formosa shard on February 23rd, local Taiwan time. Formosa is the 20th worldwide Ultima Online shard and the first to be located in Taiwan.

The shard’s name means “the beautiful” in Portuguese, and dates back to the 1500’s, when the island of Taiwan was discovered by Portuguese explorers.

Formosa is the 8th Asian Ultima Online shard, and is staffed by bilingual Taiwanese and English speaking Counselors and Game Masters.

Balhae Shard Opened [15022k]

We are pleased to announce the global opening of Balhae shard on February 16th, KST. Balhae was the 19th Ultima Online shard to open worldwide, and is located in Korea – making it the 7th local Asian shard and a welcome addition to the global Ultima Online community.

Korean Ultima Online players helped choose the name of this shard, by voting for the name “Balhae”. Balhae dates from the 7th century and is the name of a famed ruling dynasty.

Origin plans to improve upon worldwide localized support by further staffing Balhae with bilingual Korean and English speaking staff.

Oceania Shard Announced [27012k]

We are pleased to announce that after a smooth pre-production period, Oceania, our first Australian shard, opened slightly late this morning at 12:30 AM Sydney time. The Oceania shard is our 21st shard worldwide and is expected to greatly enhance gameplay for South Asia-Pacific players.

Named for the approximately 25,000 islands located in the area of the Pacific Ocean known as the South Seas, Oceania will be open exclusively to South Asia-Pacific players (excluding Japan) for a limited period of time, allowing these local players to develop a strong community base. In the next few months, Oceania will be opened to the global UO community, allowing UO players worldwide to enjoy this newest shard.
